Jaw-dropping curb appeal, a plethora of local bars and restaurants, and a central location close to Downtown Raleigh are just a few things that make Historic Oakwood such a splendid place to live in Raleigh. The 19th-century neighborhood is designated on the National Register of Historic Places and is also Raleigh’s first local Historic District. Its quiet streets are lined with lush trees and beautiful restored historic homes make Oakwood one of Raleigh’s most charming and sought-after neighborhoods. Here, we list five of our favorite things about living in Historic Oakwood!

The Homes, Obviously

Naturally, our favorite thing about Oakwood are the absolutely stunning homes, which boast a variety of Victorian architectural styles. Touring the neighborhood is like walking through an architecture museum! Since 1970, these homes have been rehabilitated and restored with modern touches while leaving the rich history intact. They’re a feast for the eyes for sure!

Pizza

That’s it, that’s the tweet. In all seriousness, Oakwood Pizza Box is one of Historic Oakwood’s great treasures, and one of Raleigh’s best pizza joints. The favored casual eatery offers traditional cheese, square, and white pizzas with various veggie and meat add-ons, plus beer and wine. It’s essential for a Raleigh picnic or quick takeout dinner!

More Great Eats and Drinks

Besides pizza, Oakwood features a host of other beloved locally owned bars and restaurants, including William & Company (you can actually order a pie to-go from Oakwood Pizza Box and enjoy it while sipping on Willco’s delicious cocktails!), Crawford and Son, SmokeStacks Cafe, and Pelagic Beer & Wine.

The Spookiest Halloween Scenes

Historic Oakwood is notorious for its Halloween decor. Every year, homeowners put up the best decorations in town, making it the go-to neighborhood for young trick-or-treaters and adults craving a decked-out haunted tour.

A Stone’s Throw From Downtown

You can literally see Downtown Raleigh‘s streets from the Historic Oakwood neighborhood, yet it’s far enough removed that you can enjoy the peace and quiet—the best of both worlds. DTR’s many shops, restaurants, and entertainment are mere minutes away, giving the neighborhood even more allure for those who want to be in the middle of it all.
